Can I Still Cruise If My Passport Is Lost or Stolen Enroute?

Stolen Passport

Maybe, but don't assume you'll be able to board your ship. Whether you can continue with your cruise depends on your itinerary, the countries you'll visit, your citizenship, and the type of replacement travel documents you receive. If your passport is lost or stolen before embarkation, act quickly and contact the appropriate officials immediately.

Few situations create more stress than discovering your passport is missing just before your cruise. It may happen while traveling to your departure city, during a pre-cruise hotel stay, or while sightseeing before embarkation.

Although every situation is different, acting quickly gives you the best chance of finding a solution.

First, Don't Panic

Before assuming your passport has been lost or stolen, carefully check your luggage, hotel room, carry-on bag, and any places you've recently visited.

If you still can't locate it, begin taking action immediately.

Time matters.

Contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate

If you're outside the United States, contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate as soon as possible.

They can explain your options, verify your identity, and help you obtain replacement travel documents if appropriate.

If your passport was stolen, report the theft to the local police. While a police report isn't always required, it may be helpful depending on your situation.

Contact Your Cruise Line and Cruise Specialist

As soon as possible, notify both your cruise line and your Cruise Specialist. They can explain your boarding requirements, discuss possible options, and help you understand how your itinerary may be affected.

Every cruise is different, so avoid assuming that someone else's experience will apply to your situation.

Will an Emergency Passport Allow Me to Cruise?

Not necessarily. An emergency passport may allow you to continue your travels or return home, but it doesn't automatically guarantee you'll be able to board or rejoin an international cruise.

Some itineraries have additional entry requirements, visa requirements, or country-specific documentation rules that must also be satisfied.  Because every itinerary is different, only the cruise line and the appropriate government authorities can determine whether you'll be able to continue your vacation.

The Best Solution Is Prevention

The easiest passport problem to solve is the one that never happens.

Before every international trip, I recommend:

  • Taking a photo of your passport.
  • Making a full-size color photocopy.
  • Keeping the copy separate from your passport.
  • Saving a secure digital copy that you can access while traveling.

Those simple steps won't prevent a loss, but they can make replacing your passport much easier if the unexpected happens.Losing your passport before your cruise doesn't automatically mean your vacation is over. However, it also doesn't guarantee you'll still be able to sail.

Your best chance for a successful outcome is to act quickly, contact the appropriate officials, and work closely with your cruise line and Cruise Specialist to understand your options.
