STEP Program

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service offered by the U.S. Department of State that allows U.S. citizens to register their international travel. While enrollment isn't required, many experienced travelers choose to use it because it helps the U.S. Embassy contact you in the event of an emergency or major disruption.

If you're taking an international cruise, you've probably spent time thinking about passports, travel insurance, and shore excursions. One important travel resource that many cruisers overlook is the STEP Program.

Enrollment takes only a few minutes, and it can provide an extra layer of security while you're traveling abroad.

What Is the STEP Program?

STEP stands for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

When you enroll, you provide the U.S. Department of State with basic information about your upcoming international trip. This allows the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to contact you if there's a significant emergency affecting American travelers in the area. You may also receive important travel updates or security information for the countries you'll be visiting.

Who Should Consider Enrolling?

STEP is available to U.S. citizens traveling internationally.

While every traveler can decide whether it's right for them, I generally recommend it for:

  • International ocean cruises
  • River cruises in Europe
  • Expedition cruises
  • Land vacations outside the United States
  • Travelers spending several days overseas before or after their cruise

If your vacation includes multiple countries, STEP can be an easy way to stay informed during your travels.

Is STEP Required?

No, enrollment is completely voluntary.  However, many experienced international travelers consider it a worthwhile part of their pre-travel checklist because it provides another way to receive important information while traveling abroad.

Where Do I Enroll?  The STEP Program is administered by the U.S. Department of State.

The STEP Program takes only a few minutes to complete, costs nothing, and may provide valuable assistance if an emergency occurs while you're traveling internationally.  While no one expects their vacation to be interrupted, enrolling in STEP is a simple way to be better prepared before your cruise begins.
