Not all Alaska glacier experiences are the same. Here's what makes Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier, and Endicott Arm unique, so you can choose the itinerary that's right for you.

If you're planning an Alaska cruise, you've probably noticed that every itinerary seems to feature a different glacier. One cruise visits Glacier Bay National Park, another highlights Hubbard Glacier, while others sail into Endicott Arm to visit Dawes Glacier.

It's one of the questions I hear most often:

"Which Alaska glacier is the best?"

The good news is there really isn't a wrong choice. Each offers an incredible experience, but they are very different. Understanding those differences will help you choose the itinerary that best matches your travel style.

Glacier Bay National Park: The Classic Alaska Experience

For many travelers, Glacier Bay National Park is the gold standard. Unlike simply sailing past a glacier, Glacier Bay is an entire National Park. Ships typically spend much of the day cruising through protected waters surrounded by snow-covered mountains, wildlife, and multiple glaciers.

One feature that makes Glacier Bay special is that National Park Rangers come aboard to provide commentary throughout the day. You'll learn about the park's history, geology, wildlife, and the glaciers themselves while watching the scenery unfold around you.

• First-time Alaska cruisers
• Nature lovers
• Wildlife viewing
• Travelers wanting the classic Alaska experience

One thing to remember is that glaciers are part of nature. Weather, fog, ice conditions, and wildlife all influence every visit. Some days offer spectacular blue skies and incredible glacier views, while other days can be misty and mysterious. Either way, Glacier Bay remains one of Alaska's signature cruise experiences.

Hubbard Glacier: Alaska's Giant

If your cruise visits Hubbard Glacier, prepare to be impressed.  Hubbard is North America's largest tidewater glacier and stretches for more than 75 miles into the mountains. Its sheer size is difficult to describe until you're standing on deck watching the glacier fill your entire horizon.

Hubbard Glacier is also known for dramatic calving events, where massive chunks of ice break away and crash into the water with a sound that echoes throughout the bay.  For many experienced Alaska travelers, Hubbard Glacier provides the single most dramatic glacier viewing experience of the trip.

Best for:

• Travelers who love spectacular scenery
• Photography
• Witnessing glacier calving
• Repeat Alaska visitors

Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier: My Personal Favorite Adventure

If you're looking for a more intimate glacier experience, Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier deserve serious consideration.  Rather than cruising through a broad bay, ships navigate a narrow fjord surrounded by towering granite cliffs, waterfalls, floating icebergs, and abundant wildlife.

Many cruise lines also offer a small-boat glacier excursion, allowing guests to leave the ship and travel much closer to Dawes Glacier than the cruise ship can safely approach. This excursion is an additional investment, but from my own experience, it was worth every penny. Weaving through floating blue icebergs while approaching the glacier from a much smaller vessel created one of the most memorable days I've ever experienced in Alaska.

• Photographers
• Travelers wanting a close-up glacier experience
• Guests willing to splurge on a once-in-a-lifetime excursion

So… Which Alaska Glacier Is Best?

Here's my advice.

If this is your first Alaska cruise, I generally recommend Glacier Bay National Park because it delivers the classic Alaska experience and is often the itinerary travelers dream about.

If your itinerary includes Hubbard Glacier, you're in for one of the most spectacular glacier viewing experiences Alaska has to offer.

And if you have the opportunity to visit Endicott Arm and take the small-boat glacier excursion, it's one of my favorite experiences in Alaska and something I would happily do again.

The Right Glacier Depends on the Vacation You Want

Rather than asking,

"Does this cruise include Glacier Bay?"

I encourage travelers to ask,

"Which glacier experience best matches the kind of Alaska vacation I want?"

The truth is, there isn't one perfect answer.

Some travelers fall in love with Glacier Bay's National Park setting. Others are amazed by the sheer size and power of Hubbard Glacier. And many, myself included, cherish the unforgettable experience of navigating through floating icebergs on a small boat toward Dawes Glacier.
